The first Janusz Korczak lecture organized by the Shalom Foundation 2007-11-22 The first Janusz Korczak’s lecture was given in Warsaw on 20th November 2007, in the International Day of the Rights of a Child. on this occasion, Thomas Hammarberg, Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights, talked about “Children have the right to be heard and adults should listen to their views”. The meeting took place in the Janusz Korczak Children’ Home in 6th Jaktorowska Street in Warsaw.
"The most important thing which we can learn from Korczak is love and respect, and how an adult can give it to a child." Thomas Hammarberg The meeting was organized under the Patronage of Mayor of the Capital City of Warsaw, Mrs. Hanna Gronkiewicz-Waltz.
Representatives of Ministries, Diplomacy and Embassies arrived to the meeting. Among them: Mrs. Hanna Machińska – the Director of the Information Office of the Council of Europe, Mr. Janusz Kochanowski – the Commissioner of the Civil Rights Protection in Poland, Ewa Nakanda Trepka – the Restorer of Monuments in the Capital City of Warsaw. Among major guests there were also the children from Janusz Korczak Children’ Home in Jaktorowska Street in Warsaw, and the youth from a secondary school in Busko Zdrój.
A message by Irena Sendler was shown during the meeting. There was also a theatre performance based on lyrics by Janusz Korczak titled ”Warsaw is Mine and I am Warsaw’s”, presented by actors and actresses of the Jewish Theatre in Warsaw.
The event was accompanied by an exhibition of books by Janusz Korczak, translated into many languages of the world. << back |
