The first Janusz Korczak lecture organized by the Shalom Foundation

The first Janusz Korczak’s lecture was given in Warsaw o­n 20th November 2007, in the International Day of the Rights of a Child. o­n this occasion, Thomas Hammarberg, Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights, talked about “Children have the right to be heard and adults should listen to their views”. The meeting took place in the Janusz Korczak Children’ Home in 6th Jaktorowska Street in Warsaw.

The meeting was organized under the Patronage of Mayor of the Capital City of Warsaw, Mrs. Hanna Gronkiewicz-Waltz. 

Representatives of Ministries, Diplomacy and Embassies arrived to the meeting. Among them: Mrs. Hanna Machińska – the Director of the Information Office of the Council of Europe, Mr. Janusz Kochanowski – the Commissioner of the Civil Rights Protection in Poland, Ewa Nakanda Trepka – the Restorer of Monuments in the Capital City of Warsaw. Among major guests there were also the children from Janusz Korczak Children’ Home in Jaktorowska Street in Warsaw, and the youth from a secondary school in Busko Zdrój.

The message by the President of Poland Mr. Lech Kaczyński, was read by Mrs. Urszula Przelaskowska from the Chancellery of the President. The Mayor of the Capital City of Warsaw - Mrs. Hanna Gronkiewicz-Waltz  welcomed everyone in Korczak’s Warsaw. The Director of the Shalom Foundation - Mrs. Gołda Tencer reminded Irena Sendler, the person who saved lives of over 2.500 Jewish children, during the 2nd WW. The President of the Polish Janusz Korczak Association – Mrs. Jadwiga Bińczycka expressed the readiness of the Polish and the International Janusz Korczak’s Associations to promote the ideas of Janusz Korczak in Europe and in the whole world.

The ceremony was organized by the Shalom Foundation in cooperation with Council of Europe, the Capital City of Warsaw, the Polish Janusz Korczak Association as well as with KORCZAKIANUM, the Branch of the Historical Museum of Warsaw.

"The Small Review" was the title of a newspaper, which used to be written by children of Janusz Korczak in the orphanage he led. o­n this occasion a similar newspaper was published, because of the initiative amd by the means of the Shalom Foundation.   

A message by Irena Sendler was shown during the meeting. There was also a theatre performance based o­n lyrics by Janusz Korczak titled ”Warsaw is Mine and I am Warsaw’s”, presented by actors and actresses of the Jewish Theatre in Warsaw.

The event was accompanied by an exhibition of books by Janusz Korczak, translated into many languages of the world.
